Reiki: What and Why

At Acuity, one of the services I offer is Reiki sessions. Whether you have an individual session or use it to supplement your therapeutic massage, you can reap the many benefits Reiki has to offer. Below is some background information on Reiki and what a Reiki session looks like.

What is Reiki?

Reiki is a Japanese word, meaning “Universal life energy.” It is the energy that surrounds us in our environment. The practice of Reiki involves bringing Universal Life Force (Rei) through personal energy (Ki) with the intention of healing the recipient.

What is the purpose of Reiki?

Reiki is used to promote physical, emotional, and spiritual wellness. The intention is to restore the smooth flow and balance of energy in the body.

The Reiki Healing Principles (as taught by Mrs. Hawayo Takata):

- Just for today: I will give thanks for my many blessings.

- Just for today: I will not worry.

- Just for today: I will not be angry.

- Just for today: I will do my work honestly.

- Just for today: I will be kind to my neighbors and every living thing.

What happens during a Reiki session?

Your Reiki session will take place in a warm, comfortable, private, quiet room. Clients are fully clothed for Reiki sessions. Soft music may be played to help you relax. You will lie on a table especially designed for massage therapy, which is also appropriate for Reiki sessions. Pillows and bolsters will also be available for your comfort.

During a Reiki session, the practitioner channels universal life energy through himself or herself to the client. This can be done with gentle hand placement (holds) on the client’s body. Alternatively, the practitioner’s hands can be placed above the client’s body, but inside of the aura (a person’s energy field).

Will Reiki cure certain ailments?

Reiki is not a cure-all treatment. Rather, it is best used to complement other medical treatments, as a supportive therapy to promote overall wellness. As with all medical conditions, it is best to consult your primary care provider about an appropriate course of treatment/management.
